Ras Mumhan Stg 4

By | Racing | No Comments

I had great intentions of writing this report last night but tiredness hit me like a sledge hammer along with a 2 and 3 year old and a few Easter Eggs I had to eat! There was a lot to play for on the last stage of Ras Mumhan as 11 riders were within a minute of the yellow jersey and historically the race blows apart on the finishing circuits so there was a lot of tension in the bunch leaving town. We had a tailwind heading out the road I was caught at the back of the bunch I…

Ras Mumhan Stg 3

Today was the queen stage of Ras Mumhan Philip Cassidy once described this as the finest road stage in Ireland (or words to that effect) and any time I have rode it regardless of how I have gone I would agree with this sentiment, it has everything climbs, descents, twisty technical roads with Kerry’s finest surface and wind normally lots of winds as we start right on the coast. The first 4km were neutralised as perhaps the 4 most nerve wracking km of the stage as we all battled for position to be near the front when the flag dropped….

God that was a hard stage I can only hope everyone else found it hard as well, stage 2 of Kerry Group Ras Mumhan was a new stage out of Listowel and finishing in Athea a place I must admit I have never being to before (that’s actually a lie I know we passed through it on the ras a few years ago) but I have a feeling Ras Mumhan will be visiting again as it was an excellent stage. We started out from Listowel with a nice cross wind to keep us on our toes, so position was key,…

Heading into sign on at Ras Mumhan today felt like a bit of a murphy and gunne reunion, I met Tim Cassidy first then Morgan Fox and Andrew Roche (who seemed very surprised I was racing which I didn’t take as a great vote of confidence) I love Ras Mumhan but I hate the first 15k of it as we speed out to Killarney with numerous lock ons etc. There was 6 Panduit Carrick Wheelers rides in the race this year, joining me were Cathal Purcell, Sean Yelverton Ray Cullen and Mark Bergin who got drafted in after Jamie Blanchfield…

Munster Cyclo Cross League Rd6

By | Racing | No Comments

The final round of the Support your Local Bike Shop Munster cyclo cross league brought us to the premier county, that’s county Tipperary to those of you reading from outside of Ireland! The previous round had brought us to the Kingdom (co Kerry to the outside world) for the 5th round. I had a disappointing race there and could only manage 6th, I had hoped for more but felt very flat and this was confirmed over the next couple of days when I got a little bit sick. I blame this sickness for my lack of a blog, that sickness…

Round 4 of the Munster Cyclo Cross league brought us to the East Cork Adventure Centre just outside of Midelton, De Ronde were this week’s host club. This race was always going to be a hard one for me as I had a good friend’s wedding the day before,(need to get my excuses in early) I was home at 1am and up at 7am to load the car with the Verge stand to be on the road for 8am so I could set up on the course in plenty of time. I had seen pictures of the race De Ronde…

Last Sunday I ended up in Fota Wildlife Park on the outskirts of Cork City, I was not there to check out the wildlife but to chase a few Gazelles around during the first round of the “Support your local bike shop” Munster CX league. It was a beautiful morning in Cork as I unloaded the Verge stand beside the Focus Munster CX Team tent the guys were good enough to give me a hand setting up and then proceeded to rob the chairs I had brought with me but fair is fair I suppose. The underage races were in…

“Support your local bike shop” Munster CX League

This weekend marks a big step in the development of cyclo cross in Ireland and in particular the Munster region with the first round of the “Support your local bike shop” Munster CX league taking place in the grounds of Fota Wildlife Park on the outskirts of Cork City. This is the first of six races in the series, it’s great to see a large number of clubs adopting cyclo cross, it can be a fantastic introduction to racing as its much safer that road racing especially for youngsters as there are no cars involved and the worst you can…

Cyclo Cross Season is here

By | Racing | No Comments

We have all seen the hash tags over the last few months saying #crossiscoming but finally we can say that #crossishere time to put away the skinny tyres and take out the 33mm mud plugging ones. Cross season kicked off this weekend with racing in the Kinning’s League in Belfast on Friday night and down South with the Fixx Supercross Cup in Dublin on Sunday Normally I would not expect to find myself at a cross race at 8 on a Friday evening (well no one would as its dark so we were treated to the first floodlit race in…
